What is an insulin pump?
An insulin pump is a small electronic device about the size of a small mobile phone or MP3 player. It can hold up to 300 units of insulin, which is programmed to deliver continuously through a small tube.
Does everyone adapt to wearing an insulin pump?
A recent survey showed that over 99% of all people who chose insulin pump therapy feel better than before, their blood glucose levels have improved, and they have more control over the management of their diabetes. The pump will also normalise your day to day activities, i.e. no more eating at set times of the day.
Why would I choose to pump?
To prevent the long term complications of diabetes
Insulin pump therapy has been proven to greatly reduce the risk of complications from diabetes. These complications include eye disease, kidney disease, nerve damage to extremities, and vascular damage, one of the primary causes of heart disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, amputation and impotence in this country. These can be delayed and/or avoided entirely through the use of an insulin pump. The best way to avoid these problems, which will dramatically affect your quality of life, is to achieve good control of your blood sugar levels. This is made easier with a DANA insulin pump.
Do I need to be a particular age before I can wear a pump?
